Hiking adventures in Sesto

Hiking adventures in Sesto

Hiking in Sesto in spring, summer, and autumn offers plenty of variety and fun. The perfect starting point for countless hikes is the fascinating Fiscalina Valley. Starting directly from the village of Moso, you may walk right into the Nature Park “Three Peaks”, along colourful flower meadows, striking rock walls, dense forests, and the Sesto Sundial. At the entrance to the valley, you will find an abundance of larch trees that radiate their charm especially during the flowering period. Between the trees, there are weathered wooden huts, which serve as storage for the fragrant alpine hay. The early summer period awaits you with crocuses, primroses, and gentians, while the summer time brings colourful flowering meadows with shining lilies, arnica blossoms and alpine roses.

Popular Nature Park “Three Peaks”

Popular Nature Park “Three Peaks”

The Nature Park “Three Peaks” is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in the Dolomites, just like the Nature Park “Fanes-Sennes-Braies”. The Three Peaks are easily accessible and count among the most famous rock formations of the Alps. They attract countless visitors every year. The itineraries that surround the mountain range include some of the most popular hiking trails in the Dolomites, since they are easy to walk even for inexperienced hikers.

The Three Peaks Lodge is a well-known starting point for many tours and a popular destination for day trips. It is located at an altitude of 2,405 meters and guarantees a perfect view of the Three Peaks. The most eastern point of the Nature Park is Passo Croce, which forms the border with the Veneto region. During the First World War, the surroundings of the Three Peaks were a fiercely contested part, which makes the region an exciting destination for all friends of history. The bunker installations that Mussolini had built for the protection against Hitler are still partly visible. Other popular hiking destinations include the rustic mountain huts “Büllelejochhütte” and “Zsigmondyhütte”, which serve hungry hikers delicious South Tyrolean specialties. Take a hike along the Carnia Paths on the border between Italy and Austria and discover the surrounding pastures, Klammbach, Nemes and Coltrondoalm.

Particularly family-friendly Croda Rossa and Mount Elmo

For families, especially the area around the Croda Rossa is a popular hiking destination with a family-friendly circular walking trail and two beautiful mountain playgrounds. From Moso, the Croda Rossa Meadows are only a few minutes away by cable car. Discover an idyllic landscape with a view of various alpine peaks. Here the beauty of the Dolomites, as well as the history of the First World War, are ubiquitous. The open-air museum “Bellum Aquilarum” is only a 45-minute walk from the Croda Rossa mountain station. The village of Sesto was on the front line during World War One. The museum reminiscences the violent clashes between Austrian and Italian soldiers. There are exhibitions and historical tours.

The most beautiful panoramic mountain in the Sesto Dolomites Mount Elmo

From Mount Elmo, you may enjoy unique panoramic views of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage – the Dolomites. There are also beautiful walking and hiking trails. Olperl’s Bergwelt, the new adventure park on Mount Elmo offers a circular path and barefoot trail for the entire family – it starts and ends at the Mount Elmo Restaurant. At various “experience points”, children will discover the alpine world through the eyes of the legendary figure “Olperl”. It is accessible via the Sesto panoramic cable car. Paragliders appreciate Mount Elmo as a first-class flight mountain – upon request, tandem flights are offered.

A truly special experience – admire the sunrise from Mount Elmo. From mid-July to mid-September, on certain days, you may experience the sunrise at Mount Elmo with 360° panoramic view of the UNESCO World Heritage and the Central Alps, as well as a mountain breakfast.

Further natural highlights of the region include Lake Braies and the alpine plateau Plätzwiese. The cultural centres of the region are the somewhat more urban townships of Dobbiaco as well as San Candido with its well-known village church.

Book your special hiking holiday in the Dolomites today and be enchanted by the region of South Tyrol.
